Oscillation between Antennas

When installing a cellular signal boosting solution, one of the most important things to do is to make sure that there is enough separation between the outside antenna and inside antenna. A lack of separation between these antennas will cause oscillation (or feedback). This occurs when the outside antenna and inside antenna communicate with one another causing a radio frequency (RF) loop.

The oscillation problem depends on three variables; one is the operating power of the amplifier, the sending/receiving power of the outdoor/exterior antenna as well as the power of the indoor/interior antenna. The more powerful gain of your amplifier and the more powerful antenna which you are using will mean a larger required separation between the inside antenna and the outside antenna. The simple rule of thumb is, the greater the gain of your system, the larger the separation.

For a wireless vehicle amplifiers, popular options include the MobilePro (Wilson 801240), the Mobile Wireless (Wilson 801201) and the SOHO 60 (Wilson 801245) with the last one for large vehicles such as RVs, EMS vehicles and boats. For these amplifiers, the requirements are different. The MobilePro and Mobile Wireless both have a requirement of placing the antenna at least 12 inches away from any other antenna or any vehicle window and a distance of 5 feet between the inside and outside antenna. Both of these also have requirements of placing the outside antenna at least 20 inches away from any person and the inside antenna 8 inches away from any cellular device. The SOHO 60 on the other hand requires a separation of 20 feet between inside antenna and outside antenna on the lowest gain or 50 feet on the highest gain. The inside antenna however can be placed directly underneath the outside antenna.

Highly popular wired or cradled solutions include the Sleek family (Wilson Sleek 815226, Wilson Sleek 4G-V 815126, Wilson Sleek 4G-A 815326, Wilson Sleek 4G-C 812726F and Wilson Sleek 4G 813425), and the SIGNALBOOST (Wilson 811210, Wilson 811211 and Wilson 811214). The Sleek family has a requirement of placing the outside antenna at least 12 inches away from any other antenna as well as 6 inches away from the sunroof or rear vehicle windows and 8 inches away from any person. The SIGNALBOOST amplifier requires having the exterior antenna at least 12 inches away from any other antenna or person.

For small building solutions, options include a vehicle solution used in a desktop setting (the MobilePro, Mobile Wireless, Sleek family and SIGNALBOOST described above), the DT Desktop (Wilson 801247), the DB Pro (Wilson 801262 which is available in kits Wilson 842162 and Wilson 841263) and the SOHO 60 (Wilson 801245). For vehicle solutions used in a desktop setting, the MobilePro and Mobile Wireless both require that the outside antenna is at least 5 feet between the inside antenna as well as 12 inches away from any other antenna and 20 inches away from any person. For any Sleek, it is required to have 8 inches between the mini magnet mount and the Sleek cradle or 30 inches between any other outside antenna and the Sleek. Furthermore, the outside antenna is required to be at least 12 inches away from any other antenna or person. For the SIGNALBOOST, the outside antenna is required to be at least 12 inches away from any other antenna or person. The DT Desktop has very specific needs. It is required that the inside antenna is pointed away from the inside antenna as well as the amplifier. It is also required to have a 20 horizontal foot separation between the inside antenna and the outside antenna or a 20 vertical foot separation when the inside antenna is placed within a 5 foot radius below the outside antenna (commonly referred to as the null zone). The DB Pro requires 15 feet between the inside antenna and outside antenna or for the inside antenna for the lowest gain but up to 50 feet for the highest gain or for the inside antenna to be placed in the null zone of the outside antenna. For a directional antenna, it is also required that the outside antenna is pointed away from the inside antenna. The SOHO 60 is similar only it requires a separation distance between inside and outside antennas of 20 feet on the lowest gain.

For large building solutions, popular solutions include the AG Pro 70 (Wilson 801265 available in kits Wilson 801265-BL1 and 801265-BL2), AG Pro 75 (Wilson 801280-BL1 and 801280-BL2) and the SOHO 65 (Wilson 805045). For all of these amplifiers, the required separation between inside antenna and outside antenna is 20 feet at the lowest gain or 50 feet at the highest gain. The inside antenna can also be placed into the null zone of the outside antenna. It is also required that a separation of 20 feet exists from the outside antenna for each additional inside antenna.

801280: 20ft between inside antenna and outside antenna for lower gain, 50ft for maximum gain (20ft for each inside antenna)

801245: 20ft between inside antenna and outside antenna for lower gain, 50ft for maximum gain (20ft for each inside antenna)

805045: 20ft between inside antenna and outside antenna for lower gain, 50ft for maximum gain (20ft for each inside antenna)

AG Pro Installer: 20ft between inside antenna and outside antenna for lower gain, 50ft for maximum gain (20ft for each inside antenna)

801247: 20 horizontal feet or 15 vertical feet

801262: 15ft between inside antenna and outside antenna for lower gain, 50ft for maximum gain

801865: 20ft between inside antenna and outside antenna for lower gain, 50ft for maximum gain (20ft for each inside antenna)

802365: 20 VERTICAL feet. If inside coverage is not sufficient, 75 feet of horizontal separation.

804080: 20 VERTICAL feet. If inside coverage is not sufficient, 75 feet of horizontal separation.

801212: 5 foot separation between inside antenna and outside antenna. Inside antenna must be at least 8in away from any person. Outside antenna must be at least 20in away from any person. Outside antenna must be at least 12in from any other antenna.

801240: : 5 foot separation between inside antenna and outside antenna. Inside antenna must be at least 8in away from any person. Outside antenna must be at least 20in away from any person. Outside antenna must be at least 12in from any other antenna.

Sleek Family: At least 12 inches away from any other antenna as well as 6 inches away from the sunroof or rear windows and 8 inches away from any person
